MY NUTRITION + PROTEIN FOR BEAUTY

IMG_1321 IMG_1370 IMG_1310 I have mentioned here and there some of the things I like to eat. I very rarely show what I eat, but when I do you know I love to eat foods for the skin – foods that enrich and enhance beauty. In this post I will share with you some of my essentials! I keep things very simple in my everyday life in all areas, so it is the same with my nutrition. I keep it simple!

Breakfast

I love to start my day with my favorite skin food: a super healthy and super purple (haha) acai bowl, granola, bananas! This is me on my fancier days. When I have time, I love to make myself Avocado toast.

I need to have my coffee. So coffee is my thing. Black.

Simpler mornings are oatmeal and tea, water with lemon & honey.

Lunch

When I am teaching, the easiest thing to do is grab a juice at Juice Generation and keep it by my side. A habit I’ve recently formed is grabbing my Muscle Milk Organic from the fridge and jetting out the door. It is gluten-free! I am always on the go so these protein shakes by muscle milk give me a boost of energy and the protein I know I lack. It is my solution for protein (and adding powder to my shakes) so that I can get enough intake. I am not much of a meat eater so I need to get my protein source else where. Protein is so essential for getting balance (if you are like me and drink a lot of greens) and for healthy hair, skin. There is a glow that I have when I feel balanced inside. When I look or feel dull I know my nutrition is off balance.

When I am not teaching I love to have lunch dates. Indulging in vegan and gluten free foods are fun because it is an eye opener on what options we have to make better choices. If not at a vegan/gluten free spot, I am happy with exploring menus. I am not picky, and I keep it simple. I like balance. I can’t eat just a salad, I love hearty healthy foods.

Dinner

Dinner to me is more about engaging in and interacting with the people you are with. I grew up with family dinners every night at 7pm and so I have kept the routine of enjoying not only the food, but the people you break bread with. Most nights it is with my husband. We eat in many ways the same, and in so many ways not the same but we’ve come to compromise on eating foods that meet in the middle. I love to include fish like salmon as much as I can. I’m sure many ladies understand the struggle of trying to be healthy when the man/woman in your life has a love for Oreos, pizza, and lots o’ rice! Ha! The struggle is real. But there is compromise and it is okay to eat the things you crave, in moderation. I love tacos, eat tacos! Keep your sanity and love your body. That is the most important thing here is to be aware of what you intake, find balance that works for you, and love your body!

Snacks

Because my schedule can be scattered and my new nutrition plan is to intake more (yes more, because my metabolism is so fast due to my lifestyle and would love to keep my curvy figure), I plan on consistently drinking my Muscle Milk Organic (which includes 20 grams of protein) and making protein shakes everyday- see one recipe below! I snack way more and always try to keep food around like bananas, protein bars, and this week it was a bag of pomegranate seeds! Yes pomegranate seeds. They are my favorite. And it is for sure a skin food – just like protein is! Did you know that protein provides structure to the hair, skin, nails, teeth? It supplies collagen, and the collagen creates suppleness to your skin. A good collagen supply provides elasticity which helps keep us young and vibrant looking.

Sun Salutation Vinyasa – done 6x.
Inhale, hands up.
Exhale, forward fold.
Inhale, flat back.
Exhale, jump back to chaturanga* (option to step back to plank, then chaturanga).
Inhale, upward facing dog.
Exhale, downward facing dog.
Inhale, jump forwards to a flat back.
Exhale, forward fold.
Inhale, hands up.
Exhale, Tadasana (mountain pose).

*do not jump back to plank, jump back to a push-up position. If it is too challenging, step back to plank one foot at a time.

SUN SEA & SALT

IMG_8980 We hear so much about how the sun is damaging, hide from the sun, etc. etc! Then Winter in New York comes along, and all you can dream about is the sun in your face, and that salt water taste. The cold weather has just as much damaging effects if not more on your mind, body, beauty (skin). I recently went away with my fiancé to Grand Cayman to ‘change the forecast’ last weekend, and WOW. You could FEEL the therapeutic effects and natural remedies of Mother Earth just getting to work on you right away. We are naturally made of what’s found in sea water (magnesium), so when we spend time in it we become balanced in our mind, in how we feel in our bodies, and in the glow of our skin. As soon as I got back home, I hit a few health food stores to get a few things to incorporate into my skincare regimen: 100% pure sea salt, avocados, lemons, manuka honey, and pure aloe.

Here’s one at-home toner I made so that I can spritz at anytime in case I get serious beach nostalgia: mix 4 ounces of warm water with a tablespoon of sea salt. Allow the sea salt to dissipate, then apply to skin as a toner. (I use a container with a pump so its easy to spritz).

When you see qualities in a person that stand out to you, those are the very qualities that you intrinsically have whether you are aware or not. The very qualities that you find sour, are the very qualities that you’d like to approve on yourself. The next time you make a snap judgement or become aware of someones qualities that you either admire or don’t admire so much, take note and let that be a tool for yourself to self-reflect.

ROCKSTAR: REACH HIGHER

Today’s post is inspired by my PIC, my babe, my fiancé!

“Ever since I was young, his words [Jay-Z] always stood out to me. Kid from Brooklyn who didn’t want to be average. My 8th grade teacher gave me a card for graduation and it said “you were meant for greatness” and I read that and thought “wow she knows my secret” like I was Superman lol. Gotta keep grinding harder, gotta keep getting bigger.. gotta keep doing something. There is no momentum without movement, so keep it moving.”

Cues to reach up higher in Rockstar:

Lift up the toes, activate the core, ground the knuckles down to the ground, lift the hips to the sky, energetic fingertips to touch the sky, engage the glutes, relax the neck & shoulders, drop the crown of the head back, breathe.

HAND-TO-BIG-TOE POSE

I love including this into my yoga sequence in classes for balance, core engagement, leg strengthening, mind focus, clarity, and a quick confidence boost.

The way to properly execute this pose is to stand up tall, or else you lose balance.

Some tips for Hand-To-Big-Toe Pose:

  1. Open up your shoulders, chest is proud.
  2. Breathe in through your nose, out through your nose.
  3. Standing leg knee is locked.
  4. Lift up the toes of the standing leg.
  5. Your fingers and toes are interlocked tightly.
  6. Core is engaged.
  7. Chin is up – relax the jaw, and maybe even smile!

6 THINGS TO DO WHILE IN DOWNWARD FACING DOG SPLIT

6 Things to do while you are hanging out in downward facing dog split (right leg):

  1. Flex your feet and wiggle your toes – yogi toes!
  2. Place your mind and energy in the entire right side of your body, saturate the entire right side body with breath, stretch from your fingers all the way through your torso, up to the toes!
  3. Push the floor away, all of your body weight is pushed up towards the hips and grounded down through your left heel towards the floor.
  4. Breathe with gratitude.
  5. Let your head hang, no energy in the crown of your head.
  6. Close your eyes, and visualize a cleansed mind.

HOW TO GET BACK TO BASICS

Hi! I’m back. Back from vacation and now Back to Basics! We sometimes complicate the simplest of situations with our own self-importance, aka the ego. Everyday you have the choice of either waking up to be bright with a day full of miracles – or you can choose to wake up full of stress with a day full of complaints and struggles. Why even think to choose the latter? Don’t you deserve the very best? When all else fails, simplify! Get back to basics. Don’t point out all the wrongs, point out all the rights, only the best.

How to get back to basics:

Forgive, constantly! Not everyone and everything will go your way. Don’t trip up on angry people, difficult situations. Understand that every individual has a reason for why they are the way they are and then keep it moving. It’s not your job to analyze and criticize. Work on self-reflection so much so that you have no time to criticize others. Forget bad situations, keep it moving.

Be present! Learn to be where you are when you are there. Don’t worry about tomorrow, don’t think about yesterday. What is now in front of you is all that matters, take in every moment.

Spend ample time with nature. What I love about being at the beach (salty hair & flowers in the air!) is that it is so naturally healing. The breeze, the salty water, the open air – all amazing for your mind, body.

Body. Take care of it! There is no shame in taking care of your face, your body, it is the carrier of your soul. Revitalizing your body everyday is so important. Stretch, work out, meditate, get a massage, do an at-home DIY facial. Do what works for you. Stay healthy.

Let go of clutter and noise. A huge part of getting back to basics is to forget the unnecessary. Sometimes, that means giving yourself space from situations or even people who may emotionally drain you, and are energetically negative. Spend time with uplifters, high thinkers, the funny- the best types to be around. “With every encounter, we exchange information and energy, and we come away changed just a little bit.” -Deepak Chopra

BELIEVE, ACHIEVE: BODY TALK

DSC_0044 Last night, right before sunset I was walking down the west side highway with friends and the conversation came up about the desire for a more bubbly womanly figure. I was asked how do you do it? I’m no Kardashian! But I do have my set of beliefs on how to get to where you want. And yes, I do believe you can have the exact body you want. But you’ve got to believe first! Here are the top 3 things you need to know:

1) MOVEMENT – you’ve got to move it to lose it, yes. But- you don’t want to lose your butt and boobs! Be mindful of keeping a good balance of workouts — too much cardio or too much strength training will give you a specific to that workout look. Always stay balanced, and don’t over do just one type of work out.. That is why I find SLT and Yoga as the perfect balance.

2) YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT – truly! Eat well. Eat super foods. Don’t deprive yourself of GOOD healthy food. Eat right, but also don’t deprive yourself of things you love, like pizza. Eat pizza. Be happy.

3) MIND – the mind conquers all. I 100% believe that my affirmations are what makes my body balanced. I have a set of 10 to 15 affirmations specific to how I like my body to look and feel. Example: “I am so grateful for my beautifully shaped figure.”

One-Legged King Pigeon

DSC_0079 Energize and refresh your body with the One-Legged King Pigeon Pose!

Stretches the thighs, groins, psoas, abdominals, chest, shoulders, neck, and back. It stimulates the abdominals, opens the hips, shoulders, and chest.

The key is to move slowly. Start at downward facing dog, lift the right leg up to downward facing dog split, right knee forwards to the right wrist. Drop the shin down to be parallel with the mat, hips are square to the front and you are lifted and even in the hips. Extend the left leg all the way back behind you. Slowly lift the back leg up, grab a hold of your foot with your left hand/arm.

Child’s Pose, Big Toe Pose, Forward Fold, Seated Forward Fold, Hero Pose!

6 WAYS TO RE-ENERGIZE

I am taking a few days off to re-energize! I love this blog, I love what I can share with you on it. My mantra for the week: ‘Do it right the first time or not at all!’

6 Ways To Re-Energize:

  1. Journal – free writing, just write whatever comes to mind.
  2. Plan out Clear Goals – 90 Days, 6 months, 1 Year.
  3. Exercise – work your body to get your mind right, intuition is a muscle too!
  4. Self-Care – Indulge in a spa day or weekend! Plan a vacation, be out! ASAP:)
  5. Meditate – A few minutes to clear the chatter in the mind day and/or night is all you need.
  6. Friends – catch up with friends who LIFT you up, who encourage you, who share the same limitless beliefs in life.

BONUS: Sleep! Sleep a lot. Sleeping beauty style.

So excited for August! I have a lot to give for the new month, can’t wait.

SEATED FORWARD FOLD

Seated forward fold! Also great for blood circulation. It helps to balance the nerves, calm the mind.

Sit tall in a seated position. Lift up in the ribcage. Deep inhale, exhale fold all the way over. Bend the knees if you have to in order to reach the toes. Lengthening the spine then dropping the crown of the head is of utmost importance here.

BIRD OF PARADISE

Bird of Paradise is a great move to improve flexibility, open the hips, strengthen the legs, and stretch the groins.

A: Start with legs hip width apart, squat down low and stick your butt out. Swing the left hand behind the back, place the right hand underneath the right thigh, interlace hands as close to the base of your back as you can, you’re binded! Shift all of your weight into the left heel of the foot, tighten the core, lightly pick up the right foot &  feel it become weightless.

B: Inhale, lift up the entire upper body with your weightless right foot. Left leg is locked and energized with balance. Take your shoulders back as much as possible without releasing the bind.

C: Exhale, straighten the right leg and point the toes.

LOVE YOUR STORY

It’s so simple but sometimes we complicate things! Love your story, if you don’t- change the words, change the outcome by changing what you do right now at this very moment. Let go of all the excuses, let go of the same old story you keep telling yourself- ‘I’m not good enough.. not talented enough.. not pretty enough.’ Let go of that struggle! Your function in life is to be happy. If you are not happy, you are not on the correct course. Everyone has a course, a purpose, if you are not fulfilling it, you will know it because you will be sad. It is your birthright to be happy. Let go of the walls you put up, and fight through the inner ego that tells you ‘NO’. Release the ‘I can’t’ and welcome the ‘I will’.

BALANCING STICK POSE

yoga DSC_0016 I’ve been so into Bikram lately, this ‘Warrior 3’ is balancing stick pose! Love it. When you are in this pose make sure you are stretching the arms forwards, the arms are right up against your ears, no space in between, and your legs are extending all the way back – like a tug of war. The standing leg is straight, knees are locked. Tummy is tucked in all the way up in towards your spine. Point the back foot, breathe!
